Ryder studied at the Art Student’s League in New York and the Ecole Albert Defois, in France, with oil painter Ted Seth Jacobs. Ryder has taught at the Art Student’s League and Water Street Atelier in New York, as well as private schools and Ateliers in France and the United States.

Ryder published the definitive book, "The Artist’s Complete Guide to Figure Drawing." He recently founded "The Ryder School" in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
